ReStore is now accepting pick-up and drop-off donations with additional acceptability criteria to protect the health of our customers, donors, and staff.
In addition to our usual donation criteria below, ReStore must temporarily decline the following items:
- NO USED CLOTH OR FABRIC couches, loveseats, futons, sleeper sofas, chairs, ottomans, household items, home décor, curtains, cushions, bed frames, office chairs, patio umbrellas, carpet rolls, carpet padding or carpet squares.
We greatly appreciate your interest in donating to our Habitat for Humanity ReStore! Our stores are committed to maintaining a high level of quality among the products we offer for resale and therefore regretfully cannot accept all potential donations. Please use the following criteria to determine whether or not a Habitat ReStore will be able to accept your donation. For all drop-off donations, acceptability is at the discretion of ReStore staff.
Habitat ReStore is unable to accept any items that are:
- Not working
- Missing parts

- Children’s furniture
- Built-in ovens

- Radial arm saws
- Vertical blinds
- Used Plumbing fittings
- Play structures
- Entertainment centers/TV cabinets

Paint, Mattresses, and Hazardous Waste
ReStore Oakland is a collection location for Paint Care and the Mattress Recycling Council. We accept new and used paint and mattresses on behalf of these organizations to encourage recycling, but these items are not resold in our stores.
ReStore San Jose is located in the Environmental Innovation Center with a Household Hazardous Waste facility. This facility accepts aerosols, pesticides, batteries, latex paint, fluorescent lights, and other hazardous materials. Set an appointment to drop your hazardous waste here.
All appliances must be fewer than seven years old and in perfect operating condition (with all necessary parts included). We are unable to accept used Fireplaces. We are no longer accepting dishwashers, trash compactors, or double-ovens, or built-in ovens. Cosmetically, items should be nearly spotless both inside and out.
Building Materials & Hardware
Lumber and Construction Materials: Items must be unused and of a significant quantity. Please call (510) 803-3343 for an evaluation.
Paint: ReStore Oakland accepts paint for recycling purposes. Household Hazardous Waste facility located next door to ReStore San Jose also accepts paint. ReStore Concord does not accept paint donations.
Tools and Power Tools: We accept power tools and hand tools that are undamaged and in perfect operating condition. We cannot accept tools that are missing pieces. We are unable to accept radial arm saws.
All cabinets must be made of solid wood or plywood in excellent condition (no particleboard, melamine, etc.). Items must have near-perfect cosmetics and include all parts and hardware necessary for use. We are unable to accept over sized or custom built-in cabinetry.
Doors & Windows
Doors: We accept solid (no hollow-core) interior or exterior doors in good condition. Any necessary hardware must be undamaged and in near-perfect cosmetic condition. We are unable to accept oversized, commercial doors, or garage doors. Sliding closet and pocket doors must be pre-qualified by calling (510) 803-3343. Locksets and latches must include all parts necessary for use.
Windows: All windows must be dual-pane with seals intact (no between-pane condensation). Items must be fully functional (with all necessary parts) and in great condition. Windows that were formerly installed must have been removed properly to ensure reusability. Aluminum-clad and metal windows must be pre-qualified by calling (510) 803-3343.
All flooring (except area rugs) must be new, never-installed and of a significant quantity (100 sq. ft. minimum).
Furniture must be fully intact and not excessively marred or scratched. Upholstered furniture can’t be excessively worn, faded, torn, soiled or stained. Office furniture must have in-home application, we cannot accept most institutional office furniture. We do not accept sofa beds or box springs. We are no longer accepting entertainment centers or TV cabinets for donation. We can accept complete dining sets, but we are unable to take unmatched tables or chairs.
All light fixtures must be undamaged and have near-perfect cosmetics. Fixtures should include all parts necessary for use, including mounting brackets, and be in perfect operating condition. Commercial fixtures, recessed canister fixtures and fluorescent strip lights must be pre-qualified by calling (510) 803-3343. We are unable to accept track lighting, can lights or polished brass fixtures .
Plumbing & Fixtures
Bathtubs and Shower Enclosures: All items must be unused or have near-perfect cosmetics. We do not accept used conventional bathtubs, but make exception for unique items.
Toilets and Sinks: All items must be perfectly clean and without damage (no chips, cracks or stains). Fixtures must be in perfect operating condition and include all necessary parts. Toilets must be 1.6 gallons per flush or less.
Ceiling Fans: All ceiling fans must be new or nearly new and include all parts necessary for operation, including mounting brackets.
Please note, acceptability is at the discretion of the driver and the ReStore donation staff. Drivers and staff reserve the right to refuse donations based on current inventory stock and condition.
