LEED Certified San Jose

This week, The San Jose Environmental Innovation Center, a pioneer project in sustainable construction and home to ReStore San Jose, has been certified LEED Platinum!

LEED ReStore San Jose
Solar and Wind Energy at EIC

The Environmental Innovation Center, or EIC, debuted in 2014 as a showcase for various eco-friendly businesses and municipal programs. Tenants include our Habitat for Humanity ReStore, the Santa Clara County Household Hazardous Waste Program, and Prospect Silicon Valley, a nonprofit clean-tech innovation accelerator.

For those unfamiliar with LEED Certifications, the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Certification recognizes structures built with sustainable construction practices. The certifications in ascending order are Certified, Silver, Gold, and Platinum.

To become certified, a building must meet a number of requirements that demonstrate a thorough commitment to sustainable construction practices. The EIC has been a pioneering effort in sustainable design, since it was retrofitted from it’s initial use as a wax paper factory. The property includes more than 20 eco-friendly features, including solar-tracking skylights, electric vehicle charging stations, drought-tolerant landscaping, and a 1,164-panel solar power system. The EIC is also a net-zero energy facility, meaning it generates more energy than it consumes.

The EIC is now the first City of San Jose building to earn the LEED Platinum Certification for Building Design and Construction from the U.S. Green Building Council.

ReStore San Jose is proud to be a part of this sustainable project with our city and our fellow tenants. Congratulations to the City of San Jose for their certification and recognition for their work to create a sustainable business environment here in the Bay Area!
