Maybe you’ve purchased furniture at your local ReStore – like a sweet little oak end table – but its finish didn’t feel quite right for your space.

Just because that furniture piece doesn’t quite have the right look for you, it doesn’t mean you should take it to the dump! With some creativity, elbow grease, and the right kind of know-how, you can revamp the look of pre-loved wooden furniture – which means it stays out of landfill, and you get a one-of-a-kind piece, on a budget, that suits you just right.

Luckily, we’ve got that know-how ready for you! Thanks to a partnership with CalRecycle, we’re celebrating this Earth Day with FREE ReClaim Clinics. On Saturday, April 23rd, at all three ReStore locations, take part in an hour-long, hands-on experience that will walk you through the process of refinishing classic wooden furniture.
You’ll learn skills like:
- How to choose an ideal furniture piece to refinish
- How to clean and prepare a piece for refinishing
- Options for sealing, painting, and finishing your piece to fit your aesthetic
- How to install fresh hardware
Plus, you’ll get to practice some of these new skills, walk away with some parting gifts, and have the opportunity to ask questions of your skilled teachers.

Meet your teachers!
Gus Cancro has been a Site Supervisor with our Playhouse Program for six years. But his building repertoire isn’t limited to child-sized houses! Gus has years under his belt of building artisanal furniture, woodworking, designing and installing spaces and lighting environments, and more. He’s also spent years teaching and training students and volunteers, and he’s excited to pass on some new skills to our ReStore community!
Olivia Clarkin is our Playhouse Event Specialist, working with Gus to manage volunteers and Playhouse builds. In addition to this expertise, Olivia brings a breadth of building and teaching experience gained from two years as a Crew Leader on our construction sites, serving through the AmeriCorps program.
I have a dresser and 2 night stands I purchased at the Concord ReStore, so I’m excited to have more information on how to restore these pieces.
