Budgeting Tips

Large home improvement projects requiring things like doors, windows and flooring can be tough on your bank account if you aren’t careful. To make sure your next home project doesn’t end up costing you an arm and a leg, follow these budgeting tips:

Buy Used

Buying used supplies can save you a lot of money without sacrificing quality. As we mentioned above, a gently used item could mean saving 70% off of the retail price without anyone being able to tell the difference.

Do It Yourself

Like most things, home improvement projects are cheaper if you can do them yourself and save the extra costs of labor. Invite friends to help and pay them with pizza, gratitude and the promise to help them with their next big home project.

Plan Ahead

Planning ahead can also be a big money saver. Make a big list of everything you’ll need and budget yourself accordingly so there are no unexpected costs down the road. You’ll be surprised how quickly the little things can add up when you don’t plan ahead for them. Knowing what you need and how much you have to spend helps you make smart choices about what you buy so you don’t find yourself over budget by the end of your project.

To keep track, it helps to add your list of planned expenses in a spreadsheet. Include the item, the current cost and your desired cost, along with the totals. This way, you can have a bit more flexibility to wait for the perfect item at the perfect price.
